Commitment To Sustainability

Commitment To Sustainability

The most often quoted definition of "sustainability" comes from the UN Brundtland Commission, whose mission is to unite countries to pursue sustainable development together:

"Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."

At Ife Medow, we feel that sustainability is one of the most important goals we can achieve - it is at the core of everything that we do here, and is part of our thought process in every step that we take.

Sustainability in Product

From the moment Ife Medow was conceptualized, we knew we wanted to create our products using sustainable materials. We fell in love - and we hope you do, too! - with a few eco-friendly options that we decided to use in the creation of our bags and accessories.

Cork

Our Earth and Air pieces use cork, which comes from the cork oak tree. No trees are harmed through this process, which involves hand stripping the bark from the tree. The trees form new layers, and can be harvested again, every nine to ten years. Harvesting cork involves very little waste because during manufacturing, the waste is reused and ground to create other cork products.

Salmon Leather

Our Water pieces are made with salmon leather - yes, you heard that right! No, it doesn’t smell fishy! Salmon leather is made using waste from the salmon industry - the skin. The skin is usually discarded, and therefore wasted unnecessarily. By creating leather with it, we are giving a purpose to a by-product that would otherwise become trash.

Jute

We also use jute in our Water pieces. Jute is a rapidly renewable plant that only takes from 4-6 months to grow to maturity, and requires much less water than cotton, as well as no pesticides or fertilizers. It is biodegradable and recyclable, as well as extremely durable.

rPET Felt

Our Fire pieces use rPET felt, which is made from recycled post-consumer plastic bottles.

Sustainability in Retail

At Ife Medow, we not only want to maintain sustainability in the products themselves, but also in the retail processes of the company - manufacturing, packaging, and even the commercial activities of the company.

E-commerce, or online shops, use 30% less energy than traditional retail stores, on average. Ife Medow does business online, increasing our sustainability and decreasing our impact.

Sustainability in Manufacturing and Packaging

We believe in honest work for honest pay and maintaining job sustainability, as well. Therefore, Ife Medow is a sweatshop free, or “people friendly,” brand.

We wanted to reduce waste with even the smallest details, so we’ve put great thought into everything we do at Ife Medow, and our packaging is not lost in this thought process.

Shipping

Our shipping boxes and mailers are made with earth-friendly packaging that is recycled, recyclable, reusable, and even biodegradable, so you can toss them in your compost, if you want!

Paper

All of our paper goods are printed on recycled or plantable paper with vegetable based inks. Plantable? Yep, that’s right! Our hangtags are printed on PLANTABLE paper - biodegradable paper made with post-consumer materials and embedded with seeds. That means you can plant our hangtags, the paper portion will compost away, and the seeds will grow flowers, herbs, or vegetables - this will vary for each of our collections. No waste!

Dust Bags

It’s estimated that 1 TRILLION plastic bags are used and thrown away every year, worldwide, 1 billion of those in America. We don’t want to contribute to this problem, so even our dust bags are reusable.
